Dredging and dewatering of Kleine Melanen

The Kleine Melanen (4 hectares in urban area) has been dredged on behalf of Waterschap Brabantse Delta and under project management provided by DHV-Haskoning. The project comprised of two phases. In phase 1, 30,000 m³ of dredge spoil has been removed down to the peat soil, the released dredge spoil was mechanically dewatered into a semi-solid sludge cake on-site using a mobile belt press and a mobile decanter. This allowed the volume to be reduced by more than 70%. During phase 2, the sediment was sanded using sanding equipment and the addition of Phoslock. This had been especially developed for this project by Kurstjens and used to prevent subsequent the further production of phosphate from the peaty soil.
